Klaipeda Today
Town today
In 1991, after Lithuania regained its Independence, Revival entered the port town. Representatives of Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the first Lithuanian visa at the International Ferry Port. In 1991 Klaipeda University was founded, renewal of the old-town and Klaipeda castle started, Cruise Terminal was put into operation nearby.
Modern, supplied with new technologies, Klaipeda Seaport, joining the sea and land ways, has contributed to its status as an important transport hub, having an influence to the whole economy of Lithuania.
Klaipeda is famous for its traditions, cultural life and sight-seeings. The major events of the cultural life are the summer festivals – the Sea festival and Pilies Jazz Festival. Since 1934, on the last weekend of July, a traditional Sea Festival has been taking place, attracting over half a million visitors on these days. During these festivals Klaipeda becomes a so-called summer capital. Taking place each summer and attracting a lot of jazz fans and musicians, Pilies Jazz Festival, Lithuanian Sea Museum with the only Delphinium on the coast of eastern Baltic Sea and a slogan “In a free style!” are widely known outside Lithuania.
Klaipeda is a town fitting perfectly for taking rest. Everyone can enjoy white sand on the town beaches as on the whole Baltic seaside of Lithuania. A little off to the north from the town a marvelous landscape and unique natural beauty as well as tranquility of Pajūris Regional Park comes into view. Lodging and leisure services have been highly developed in Klaipeda – a lot of modern high-class hotel, cafes, restaurants, clubs and other entertainment sites invite the town’s guests. There is the only Lithuanian Sea Museum in the whole Baltic countries, unique museums of clocks, blacksmith and castle, introducing the history and traditions of Klaipeda. Yachtsmen can share their experience in two yacht clubs. One of them is at the very downtown as the Cruise Terminal. Klaipeda has been included into the cruise voyages throughout the Baltic countries. From the one side of Klaipeda town, the holiday-makers can be gladden by Palanga – the largest seaside resort in Lithuania; on the other side there is extremely beautiful natural Curonian spit – a peninsula dividing the Curonian lagoon from the Baltic Sea – as a cultural landscape recorded in the world heritage lists.
