Tall ships waved goodbye to Klaipėda and its citizens
"The Culture 2011 Tall Ships Regatta" event in Klaipėda this morning started with preparations for departure. First sailboats started berthing at 10-11 o’clock.
Hundreds of citizens gathered in the cruise ships terminal and Memel City, as well as on the piers and beaches of Smiltyne, Melnarage. Citizens and guests not only admired the ships, but also took photos and videos of the beautiful sailing vessels headed to the start of the race.
The sails were set outside the port gate Because of the unfavorable wind the sails were set outside the port gate. „The prevailing west and north-west wind, directed to the gates of the port, was unfavorable for the ships to set sails inside of the port“, – commented Kipras Paldauskas, one of the head organisers of the event in Klaipėda.
The start was given at 16:00 and the vessels will head to the port of Turku, Finland.
