The Curonian Spit (Kuršių Nerija), a unique corner of nature, which amazes everyone by its majestic symphony of sand and dunes, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Curonian Spit is a 98 kilometre long peninsula, stretching across the territories of Lithuania and the Russian Federation. The major part of the region is occupied by the Nemunas delta. The famous people of Silutė were Hugo Scheu (1818), a German landlord the most remarkable from all the owners of Silutė estate, German writer Hermann Sudermann (1857-1928). There are many old buildings that have survived from old times in Silutė.
Ventes Ragas (Ventes cape) – a little horn-shaped point of land that juts out into lagoon Crusaders build here the castle of Winderburg, which was later destroyed by the waves. Today at the end of Ventes Cape there is a lighthouse which is more than one hundred years old (build 1852). Ventes Ragas is a convenient rest spot on the main route of millions of migratory birds. Hundred of different species of birds drop in, many of them quite rare. Since 1929, an ornithological observation station has been set up on the point, and now the staff there catch, “ring”, record and release 60-80 thousand birds a year. The bird ringing station here was one of the first to begin operating in Europe.
